An XML hierarchy is commonly known as an element structure. Each element can contain a value and a series of sub-elements (it can also contain a series of attributes, but the explanation for those is beyond the scope of this document). Each value is enclosed by XML tags for its element.

The core purpose of Content Fusion is to allow content to be created and managed against any fixed XML structure. The XML structure is designed within a configuration tool and content managers then create and manage content instances against it. The structure can be changed in the future within design mode but content managers cannot change it.

A basic example of an extract of XML is shown below, in this case re-presenting a news item.

The output of Content Fusion is well formed XML containing the content that content managers have authored. Content Fusion adds value by providing a rich user interface through which to create and maintain content items whilst ensuring that the content manager does not need to have any IT skills beyond the basic use of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office.
